LEARNING AIM
Students will learn when to pronounce the full "-ed"ending in regular past tense verbs and when not to pronounce it.
WARM UP
What Did You Do?
Ask students simple questions about recent events:
•What did you do at the weekend?
•What did you do yesterday?
Write some of their answers on the board:
Ask:
•What do all these words have in common?
•Do the endings all sound the same?
QUICK TEACH
Past Tense Verbs
Write several verbs on the board:
play → played
want → wanted
Ask "Can you hear the extra "-ed" sound?"
Watch the pronunciation video and introduce the main rule:
Verbs ending in T or D usually have a full -ed sound.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1
Verb Sorting Challenge
Students sort verb flashcards into two groups:
Give each group a set of verb flashcards.
Students work together to sort the verbs into two categories:
•Say full –ed endings
•Don´t say full –ed endings
Make a Story
Give each group:
One Story Setting Card
A selection of regular past tense verb cards
Students create a short story using the verbs in the past tense.

ED Endings
Students write five past tense sentences using verbs from the lesson.
Examples
I played football.
I watched TV.
I painted a picture.
Ask a family member:
What did you do yesterday?
Write three past tense sentences.
Mum watched TV.
Dad played football.
My brother wanted pizza.
Circle words with a full -ed sound.
TEACHER TIP
Don't teach every pronunciation rule at once.
Help students notice one simple pattern:
Some verbs have a clear extra "-ed" sound and some do not.
The goal is listening and noticing, not memorising rules.
Students can learn the finer pronunciation details in future lessons.
