Chocolate Challenge: Say It, Play It, Taste It!

Beginner  - 1 hr

Aim - To help students practice the correct pronunciation of the word “chocolate” while expanding their vocabulary through fun, interactive activities and a hands-on cooking task.

WARM-UP (10 min)

Quick brainstorming: Ask students to name as many chocolate-related words as they can: chocolate bar, chocolate milkshake, chocolate chip cookies etc. and write them on the board as they come up.

CHOCOLATE PRONUNCIATION VIDEO & EXPLANATION (10 min)​

Play the first 3 and a half minutes of the video Chocolate Pronunciation & Rocky Road Recipe - English with Jody looking at the correct pronunciation and ensure that the students understand the concept.

Go through the words on the board and use the pronunciation trick to say them correctly.​​

I WENT SHOPPING PRONUNCIATION PRACTICE GAME (10 min)​

With a list of chocolate food items on the board, the class will play the "I Went Shopping" game.

The first participant says, "I went shopping and I bought," then adds a food item. The next participant repeats this phrase, includes the previous item, and adds another food item to the list. Each subsequent participant repeats all previously mentioned items and adds a new one.

Example:

Student 1: "I went shopping and I bought a chocolate cake."

Student 2: "I went shopping and I bought a chocolate cake and a chocolate milkshake."

Student 3: "I went shopping and I bought a chocolate cake, a chocolate milkshake and a chocolate bar."

This activity provides plenty of pronunciation practice and guaranteed giggles!​​​​​

ROCKY ROAD COOKING SHOW (20 min) - NO OVEN NEEDED​

Now play the second half of the video Chocolate Pronunciation & Rocky Road Recipe - English with Jody 

Students will now work together to prepare a simple Rocky Road recipe (This can be done in groups or as a whole class)

You will need chocolate, rice cereals, marshmallows and decorations (optional) Each group will need a mixing bowl a spoon and a tray or cupcake holders to put the finished mixture in.

 

STEPS​

- Break the chocolate into pieces and melt it

- Add the rice cereals and mix

- Add the mini marshmallows

- Put into a tray or individual cupcake holders and add decorations (optional)

- Put into the fridge until set

EXTRA ACTIVITY (5 min)​

If you have a few minutes of the class remaining and you are waiting for the Rocky Road to set, the students can work in groups expressing likes and dislikes e.g "I like chocolate cake, but I don´t like hot chocolate".​​​

LESSON CONCLUSION (5 min)​

Take a moment to review the pronunciation rule we have learnt and explain that today we learned how to pronounce the word chocolate correctly. We also learnt and practiced chocolate-related vocabulary, followed a recipe and became mini chefs.​​​
