Christmas Surprise Party!

Beginner Level 1 hour

Aim -Students will learn and practice basic Christmas vocabulary through songs, movement games, and a simple craft activity.

Free ESL Christmas Flashcards - Santa, Snowman, Christmas Tree, Present
Free ESL flashcards - Christmas - Angel, Sleigh, Fireplace, Candy Cane

WARM UP (5 - 10 min) - MYSTERY CHRISTMAS BAG

Bring a Christmas bag to class and tell the kids:
“Santa sent us a mystery bag… what’s inside? Let’s find out!”

Fill it with real Christmas items (ornament, small present box, stocking, star, candy cane, bells, etc.)
OR use our downloadable Christmas flashcards and pop them inside instead.

Let the children take turns reaching in without looking.
They pull out an item and shout the word together:
“Tree!” — “Present!” — “Santa!”

Add drama, surprise, and lots of “Wow!” and “Ooooh!” reactions to make it magical.

ESL Christmas - Reindeer handprint

REINDEER HANDPRINT ACTIVITY (20 min)

What you need - paper, paint or brown crayon, red stickers, googly eyes (optional) ribbon to hang (optional)

In this video, we make a cute Christmas reindeer using painted handprints, but you can make it any way you like! Kids can also trace around their hand and colour it in, or use brown paper to create the antlers. It’s simple, fun, and makes a perfect Christmas keepsake.

If you are painting their hand you can play the two games whilst the handprint is drying and come back to finish the reindeer at the end of the class.

GAME 1: STICK THE NOSE ON THE SNOWMAN (10 - 15 mns)

Draw a big snowman outline on a large sheet of paper and stick it to the wall.
Start by pointing to the parts and reviewing the body vocabulary together:
“Eyes… mouth… arms… buttons… and the NOSE!”

Blindfold each child (or let them close their eyes), give them a sticker or a paper carrot nose, spin them gently, and let them try to stick the nose in the right place.
Lots of giggles guaranteed!

GAME 2: SNOWMAN TOSS (10 mns)

Place the same snowman picture on the wall or the board.
Give the kids soft “snowballs” (cotton balls or crumpled paper).
Their challenge: hit the snowman!

You can call out parts to make it fun:
“Hit the tummy!”
“Hit the head!”
“Hit the hat!”

A really fun, high-energy game to finish the class!

LESSON CONCLUSION (5 min)

To finish the class, review the Christmas words one more time together and celebrate all the great work the children have done. Give them a big “Merry Christmas!” and let them hold up their reindeer craft to show the group. End with high fives or a fun goodbye song to leave them feeling happy, confident, and excited about Christmas.
